Work Ramps Up: New Skatepark Coming to Hammond’s Pond

Skatepark plan

The next phase of the Start With The Park project is set to take off, as Cumberland Council announces that construction of the brand‑new skatepark at Hammond’s Pond will begin next week (w/c 12 January).

This exciting project, created in partnership with leading skatepark designers Canvas, will deliver a vibrant and inclusive space for skaters, BMX riders, and scooter enthusiasts of all ages. To ensure the design truly meets the needs of its future users, consultation took place in 2025 with local youth groups such as The Rock and Carlisle Youth Zone, alongside an online questionnaire, helping shape a skatepark that incorporates the features and ideas young people asked for.

Located behind the former aviary site, the new skatepark is set to become a standout addition to Hammond’s Pond, offering an inclusive and high-quality space for the whole community to enjoy.

During the construction period:

  • There will be no disruption to the play park or entrances to Hammond’s Pond.
  • Hoarding will be placed around the construction area for public safety.
  • Some footpath obstructions and construction noise may occur, and Cumberland Council thanks residents for their patience and understanding.
  • Site access will be required by the contractor throughout the park, and larger vehicles may be present. Please be assured that all movements will be carried out in a safe, carefully monitored, and controlled manner to always ensure public safety.

Cumberland Councillor Anne Quilter, Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places said:

“We are thrilled to bring this new skatepark to Hammond’s Pond. This facility will not only promote healthy, active lifestyles for young people but will also become a vibrant hub where families and individuals can come together, learn new skills, and enjoy the outdoors. We’re grateful to residents for their support during construction and can’t wait to open the skatepark later in the year”.

This transformative project is part of the Start with the Park initiative, which forms part of a £2.6 million investment to create and improve green spaces between St Cuthbert’s Garden Village and Carlisle city centre. The project is funded by Carlisle Town Deal.

The skatepark is scheduled to open in spring 2026, and the council can’t wait to welcome residents and visitors to enjoy this exciting new space.
