Workington roadworks update: key dates and closures from 21 August

Cumberland Council is reminding residents; businesses and visitors of upcoming road closures and traffic management arrangements associated with the Workington Gateway Project and other planned highway improvements. Some dates have been revised following recent adverse weather conditions.

Workington Gateway project road closures: 

A596 Washington Street resurfacing works (additional overnight road closure)

  • Friday 21 August (7pm) to Saturday 22 August (6am) - due to adverse weather conditions experienced this week, an additional overnight road closure is required for carriageway resurfacing.

 

  • Wednesday 26 August (7pm) to Friday 28 August (6am)a two-night road closure for the installation of road markings and traffic counter loops.

 

  • Monday 14 September to Wednesday 16 September (6am) – a two-night road closure for traffic signal loop installation.

 

A596 Hall Park View road closure (Cumbria Police HQ to Calva Brow roundabout)

  • Saturday 12 September (6am) to Sunday 13 September (9pm) - this road closure is required to allow resurfacing works and road markings to be completed.

 

A596 Hall Brow road closure (M&S junction to Cumbria Police HQ)

  • Saturday 19 September (6am) to Sunday 20 September (9pm) - this road closure is required to allow resurfacing works and road markings to be completed.

 

Other planned highway works

The A66 Active Travel project on Stainburn Road is planned to commence on Tuesday 1 September and is expected to be complete by Christmas. The works will utilise temporary traffic signals during weekday working Monday to Friday.

Alongside the Active Travel project, National Highways will be carrying out resurfacing works on A66 Stainburn Road and Stainburn roundabout. The programme will be delivered within a series of weekend road closures throughout August and September and is coordinated with the Active Travel project to ensure both schemes can be completed safely and efficiently. 

The planned National Highways closures are:

  • A66 Stainburn Roundabout and Stainburn Road to Park End Road – Friday 21 August (6.30pm) to Monday 24 August (6am)
  • A66 Stainburn Roundabout to Park End Road - Friday 4 September (6.30pm) to Monday 7 September (6am)
  • A66 Ramsay Brow to Park End Road - Friday 11 September (6.30pm) to Monday 14 September (6am)
  • A66 Ramsay Brow to Park End Road - Friday 18 September (6.30pm) to Monday 21 September (6am)
  • A66 Ramsay Brow to Stainburn Roundabout - Friday 25 September (6.30pm) to Monday 28 September (6am)

     

No works are intended to take place over the August bank holiday weekend.

 

Northern Gas Networks works

Residents, businesses and visitors are reminded of the essential gas network improvement works being delivered by Northern Gas Networks on Harrington Road.

The project involves replacing ageing metal gas pipes with modern plastic pipework, helping to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply for homes and businesses in the area. A road closure and diversion route is in place and the works are expected to be complete by the end of August.

Central Way Active Travel Scheme

Active Travel improvements on Central Way are due to begin on Monday 7 September. The scheme will improve the footway and provide better facilities for people walking, wheeling and cycling. Temporary two-way and three-way traffic lights will be in place throughout the works to maintain access and ensure safety.

As part of the project, resurfacing works are also planned and will require a five-day road closure from Monday 19 October.  Further information on the traffic management arrangements and road closure will be published shortly.

 


Bridge Street footbridge repairs

Following completion of the Hall Park View and Hall Brow improvement works, repairs to Bridge Street footbridge in High Harrington are expected to commence. The works are anticipated to take between eight and ten weeks and will be carried out under temporary traffic lights.
