Trees and hedges

We protect trees if we think they are in imminent danger of being felled or damaged.

There are safeguards within the planning laws that may affect an owner's ability to do works to trees and hedgerows.

Trees and woodlands which contribute to the local environment can be protected by a Tree Preservation Order.

Trees in conservation areas have protection from pruning or felling. It is against the law to cut down or damage a protected tree.

You must give us notice and complete an application form if you plan to carry out any works to trees or woodland covered by an order.

There are no powers available to the council to deal with disputes between neighbours regarding trees on their property.  Under common law, neighbours can cut back any overhanging branches to their boundary.
