Noise nuisance

Dealing with noise nuisance that affects your quality of life.

Noise problems

Noise is part of everyday life, but it can become a nuisance when it affects others.

Noise can come from:

  • neighbours
  • businesses
  • animals
  • construction
  • outdoor events

Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, persistent or excessive noise that significantly impacts lifestyle or property enjoyment may be considered a statutory nuisance.

Not all noise counts as a statutory nuisance. Occasional or everyday household sounds are usually excluded.

We have a duty to investigate complaints of alleged noise nuisance and take action where appropriate, in line with our noise enforcement policy.
