Ship sanitation inspections

Details about ship sanitation inspections and ships water sampling.

Under the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines, ships that travel internationally must have a valid sanitation certificate every six months.

Ship sanitation inspection

An Environmental Health officer will inspect all areas of the ship, including:

  • waste management
  • food safety
  • portable water
  • infection control

After the inspection, the officer will issue one of the following:

  • Ship Sanitation Exemption Certificate
  • Ship Sanitation Control Certificate

Both certificates are valid for six months.

How to arrange an inspection

Inspections are carried out at the request of the ship's master or agent.

Before making a request, complete and return the Declaration of Health form.

The declaration form must include:

  • vessel name
  • gross tonnage
  • IMO number
  • location
  • estimated date and time of arrival and departure
  • agent contact details

To arrange an inspection at the Port of Workington or Port of Silloth, contact us at least 2 working days before the inspection is needed.

If you also need water sampling:

  • potable water sample for bacterial testing: notify us at least 2 working days before, at an additional cost
  • legionella water sample: notify us at least 5 working days before, at an additional cost

Cost and fees are based on vessel gross tonnage and number of persons onboard.
