Trade waste

How to dispose of your waste, your responsibilities as a business, get a quote for trade waste collections.

Business waste is any waste produced from commercial or trade activities. If you run a business, you are legally responsible for disposing of this waste correctly.

If you work from home, any waste from your work area counts as business waste.

Dispose of business or commercial waste on GOV.UK

You must not take business waste to a Household Waste Recycling Centre. Doing so could lead to prosecution.

How to dispose of your waste

You must separate your waste into the following categories:

  • glass, metal, and plastic
  • cardboard and paper
  • food waste (even small amounts)

There’s no minimum amount for food waste — all businesses must separate it.

These rules apply to:

  • businesses
  • charities
  • public organisations (including schools, restaurants, leisure centres, offices and healthcare facilities)

Temporary exemption

Small businesses with fewer than 10 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees are exempt until 31 March 2027.

FTE is based on total hours worked. For example, if full-time is 40 hours a week and four employees each work 10 hours, that adds up to 1.0 FTE.
