Using the toilet
If you have a disability or health condition and need help with toileting, there is advice and support to help you stay safe, comfortable, and independent.
Equipment and tools to make toileting easier
The right equipment can make this task safer and more manageable.
Toilet adaptations
Examples of equipment that can help with using the toilet include:
- raised toilet seats to reduce strain when sitting or standing
- grab rails for stability and confidence
- commodes for use in the bedroom if getting to the bathroom is difficult
- toilet frames for extra support when lowering or rising
Continence support
Continence support can involve advice, assessments, and practical products, such as:
- if you experience urgency or frequency issues, contact your GP or district nursing service for a continence assessment
- products such as pads or adaptive clothing can help maintain dignity and comfort
The Community Bladder and Bowel Service in Cumbria provides specialist nurse-led care for adults with continence issues, including assessment, treatment, and management plans.
Services are available across the county, with clinics in Carlisle, Whitehaven, Penrith, Cockermouth, and Workington.
Referrals can be made by GPs or via self-referral for those without other professional involvement.
Bathroom safety
Simple adaptations can help you move more safely around the bathroom, including:
- non-slip mats and sensor lights for safer movement
- bath boards or shower chairs if washing after toileting is challenging

Technology support
Providers can assist you in sourcing telecare services. This can range from personal alarms and other monitored devices, such as smoke alarms or fall detectors, to call the monitoring centre in an emergency (fees may apply).
You can also use:
- voice assistants can set reminders for regular toileting routines
- telecare alarms provide peace of mind if you need urgent help
