The Office of the Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Alexander Scott on 5 July 2023 as the new Lord-Lieutenant, succeeding Claire Hensman, who has served since January 2013.

Mr Scott will assume his new role immediately, taking on the responsibility of representing His Majesty The King in Cumbria.

As HM Lord-Lieutenant, Mr Scott will be working closely with businesses, charitable organisations, and communities to promote civic, cultural, and social initiatives throughout the county. Cumbria-born and educated, he has extensive experience in various private sector roles and a wide knowledge of the county from his Trusteeship of The Francis C. Scott Charitable Trust and Cumbria Community Foundation.

Speaking about his appointment, Mr Scott expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm for the opportunity to serve as the Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria said: "It is a great honour to follow in the footsteps of Claire Hensman and serve as the King’s representative in Cumbria.

“I am committed to supporting civil society, the people and organisations of Cumbria, and I look forward to working alongside them to promote our rich heritage, culture, and communities”.

Mrs Hensman said: ‘It has been an honour to serve as Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria for ten years.

“I have been privileged to work with many local communities, the Armed Services, the Church and Carlisle Cathedral over this time and I would like to thank everyone who has supported me and the Lieutenancy in the County, especially the Deputy Lieutenants (both current and retired).

“I hope during my tenure we have managed to give recognition and raise the profile of some of the outstanding individuals and organisations in the county, especially through the Queen’s and now King’s Awards.

“I have been honoured to have welcomed many members of the Royal Family and show them our diverse communities and successful enterprises; we have so many positive things going on in the county.

“I would like to thank my family, in particular my husband, Peter, who as well as being a Deputy Lieutenant has supported me so loyally over the past decade.

"I pass on the mantle of Lord-Lieutenant to Alex Scott and send him and Sam, his wife who is also High Sheriff this year, my very best wishes for this very fulfilling role.”
