Tar very much - £175,000 investment for Southerfield and Smart Hill Southerfield

Cumberland Council is pleased to announce that the local areas of Southerfield and Smart Hill Southerfield, Abbeytown are to benefit from an investment of £175,000 in our road networks.

This month will see our Highways Team start improvement works at Southerfield and Smart Hill Southerfield, with a sticky solution for recycling tar bound road planings.

The team will start to initially side out the edges of the carriageway and verge and improve the drainage in preparation of innovative in-situ carriageway recycling works with the council’s specialist surfacing contractor Stabalised Pavements Limited.

At the two locations the council will be using a recycling and encapsulating process that is situated on the sites. This will involve recycling of the carriageway, where specialist cold treatment recyclers pulverise and re-engineer the existing road materials by adding cementitious binders to create a platform for surface dressing.

The team will then introduce the tar bound road planings from previously repaired roads in the area, instead of disposing of the material. This reuse of materials is a safe and cost-effective solution, saving both time and money.
The roads will be rejuvenated in terms of shape and condition, which helps to reduced carbon emissions, cost and travel miles.

Preparation work will begin on Monday 19 June, and the recycling process of the carriageways will start on Monday 3 July, and will be completed within a week, weather permitting.

Cumberland Council teams will work during daylight hours, from approximately 7am to 7pm, every day. During this time there will be a full road closure in place, with a signed diversion route.

To keep disruption to a minimum, the Highways Team will aim to recycle a minimum of 2000 m2 per shift, which will ensure access to residents, businesses and farms within a few hours of completion.

If the public have any queries, they can contact the Highways Hotline on 0300 373 3736 for further information.

Cumberland Council wishes to thank the community for their continued support and patience while improvements are made to the highway network and apologises for any inconvenience and disruption caused.

Councillor Denise Rollo, Cumberland Council’s Executive Portfolio Holder for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:

“It is excellent news that this investment is being made to improve the road networks in Southerfield and Smart Hill Southerfield, in Abbeytown. We are utilising innovative technology to enable us to reuse and recycle parts of the existing carriageway, which in turn will help to improve the local area and its infrastructure.

“This investment is a testament to our commitment to the local community and to improving the area. I would like to thank our contractors, Stabalised Pavements Limited, and our Highways Team for their continued hard work and commitment to improving our road network.

“We are confident that this investment will have a positive impact on roads within our area, and look forward to seeing the results of this project.”
