Carlisle’s city centre will once again come alive with creativity and entrepreneurial spirit as the Teenage Market returns on Saturday 11 October.
Hosted by Cumberland Council, with funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the event will take place within the newly refurbished pedestrianised area of the city centre and will feature stalls run by traders aged between 8 and 25 years of age, alongside live performances from local young singers, musicians and dance schools.
Councillor Anne Quilter, Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places at Cumberland Council said:
“The Teenage Market is a brilliant opportunity for young people to gain real-world experience, build confidence and connect with their community. Undoubtedly a showcase for our young people’s talents, participation in a Teenage Market is a learning experience which actually starts weeks before the day of the market. I congratulate all the young traders and performers who have worked so hard to plan and prepare for this fantastic event.”
The Teenage Market offers shoppers the opportunity to buy unique and locally produced gifts and treats. With a wide variety of products on sale across 20 stalls including delicious homemade cakes, 3D printed dragons, personalised pens and bespoke crochet bags shoppers are guaranteed not to leave empty handed. Whilst also being a fantastic opportunity to make an early start on that Christmas shopping!
Anaya, aged 10, will be trading at the Teenage Market for the first time with her business Pens with Personality. Anaya’s mum, Shalana, she told us why she wanted to take part:
“Anaya began her business journey making pens on her playroom floor, experimenting with designs and ideas just for fun. Her passion quickly grew, and before long she held her very first pop-up shop on her Nana and Granda’s drive. From that moment, Pens with Personality by Anaya was born.
“Anaya wanted to take part in the Teenage Market because it gives her the chance to showcase her creations to a wider audience, meet customers in person, and continue growing her confidence. She hopes the experience will help her learn new skills, inspire other young people to follow their passions, and show that even the smallest ideas can grow into something amazing with dedication and creativity.”
The Teenage Market is also part music festival with a full programme of live entertainment throughout the day. The city centre will be buzzing with energy as Studio A Dance Company, Jordyn Louise Dance, and a host of talented young local singer-songwriters take to the stage, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere for all.
Carlisle Youth Concert Band will be performing at the Teenage Market for the first time, between 10.30am and 11.30am. Lyn Young conductor of the Youth Concert Band shared with us why they wanted to perform at the market:
“The Carlisle Youth Concert Band has been in existence since the 1960s and has represented Carlisle at home and abroad, playing music from classical, jazz, pop and film genres. Young musicians come together once a week to rehearse and they love performing at community events or in concerts, which furthers their playing abilities and increases their confidence, performing at the Teenage Market gives us a perfect opportunity to do this.”
The Teenage Market is a platform for young people to show their creative talents, connect with the community and develop their entrepreneurial and business skills. It is a national initiative set up to champion the next generation of market traders. Further information and to register to take part in future markets visit is the Teenage Market “.
