A bite size event Triathlon will be held in Carlisle this summer and is open for entries.

After the sensational Olympic success in recent years of Alex Yee and brothers Jonny and Alistair Brownlee the sport of Triathlon is becoming increasingly popular across the UK.

With more young people taking part in the sport, Carlisle Junior Triathlon Club has seen its membership grow over the past year.

Peter Goulston, coach at Carlisle Junior Triathlon Club said:

“Triathlon is a fun and inclusive sport for all abilities and ages. At Carlisle Junior Tri Club we strive to ensure that all young athletes feel supported and encouraged in their triathlon journey. Our broad membership of young people aged 7-17 includes keen athletes who compete at a regional level, and those who come to training for the camaraderie and wellbeing that they find in the friendly and atmosphere of the club.”

The club is keen to raise awareness of the sport further and as such, in association with Better at The Sands and Cumberland Council, Carlisle Junior Triathlon Club is hosting a fun bite size event for families on Sunday 31 August.

There will be two categories for people to take part in on the day, with the kids and family events comprising a 50m swim and 1km run while those aged 15 years and above can choose the same distance or complete a 200m swim and 3km run. The recreational swim will take place in swimming pool at The Sands whilst the run will be held in the adjacent Swifts Nature Reserve.

The Swim Bike Run Mini Carlisle event is purely for fun and being non-competitive is perfect for anyone who would like to give triathlon a go.  No special kit is required all you need is swim kit and goggles, trainers, shorts and a T-shirt, bags of enthusiasm and you’re good to go!

James McGarry, General Manager at The Sands Centre said:

“With training sessions for club members currently held in our pool, we were thrilled to have been asked by Carlisle Junior Tri club to host the swim element of this event at The Sands.  We are incredibly proud of our new state-of-the-art 25m and 20m pools and we look forward to welcoming everyone to The Sands Centre to enjoy our facilities and I’m sure that everyone taking part will really enjoy the event.”

The British Triathlon accredited event runs from 12.30pm to 4.30pm with registration at The Sands Leisure Centre reception.  On arrival Carlisle Junior Triathlon Club members and qualified British Triathlon Association coaches will be there to welcome participants as well as supporting them throughout the event.

Councillor Anne Quilter, Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places at Cumberland Council said:

“It is wonderful to see our green spaces being used for an event like this.  Being so close to the City Centre and The Sands Centre, The Swifts Nature Reserve is a perfect location for the run section of this triathlon event.  The Swifts is a beautiful and peaceful green space and I am sure that all those taking part will thoroughly enjoy visiting it. I wish all participants lots of luck for the event”.

With the event happening is August there is still lots of time to get involved, to discover a new sport and enjoy the achievement of completing your first multi-sport event!  For further details and information on how to enter the event visit: https://www.britishtriathlon.org/events/swim-bike-run-mini-carlisle_16701
