Buckbarrow Bridge – construction works started

Two highways team members discussing their next job

Cumberland Council is informing residents and road users that construction work at Buckbarrow Bridge, on Corney Fell has now begun.

The contractor, Cubby Construction Ltd, has been appointed to deliver the replacement bridge and reconnect the route.

Over recent months, the project has made steady progress, with final designs completed, necessary surveys and investigations carried out, consent applications submitted, and materials ordered in preparation for the works.

The existing road closure will remain in place for the duration of the construction period, with no access for all vehicles and pedestrians or cyclists through the site while works are ongoing. Cumberland Council kindly asks all vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists to use alternative routes and follow all posted signage in the area. This closure is in place for the safety of everyone involved, including members of the public and those carrying out the works.

Construction is expected to be completed by late September 2025. Cumberland Council will provide regular updates throughout the project, including confirmation of the proposed date for the road reopening.

Cumberland Council thanks residents and road users for their continued support and cooperation. These essential improvements will help restore access and strengthen the area’s infrastructure for years to come.
