May has seen the earthworks on the project progress well. After working through one of the wettest Summers on record last year, we’re now in one of the dryest Springs in over a century according to the Met Office.
Some key achievements in May included:
- Seven of the eight ponds on the project are now formed, and we have been lining and top soiling them ready for planting later in the year.
- Surfacing has begun on the new road section between the Burthwaite Road, under the new Stoneraise Bridge and towards the new Durdar Roundabout.
- We completed a large overnight concrete deck pour over the railway span of the new Caldew Crossing which means we are ‘on-track’ for the remaining deck pours over the coming months.
- The road box construction between M6 J42 to the Petteril Bridge has been formed and can be seen from Newbiggin Road. This work is in preparation for the upcoming Newbiggin Road closure.
Read on below to find out about upcoming road closures and reopenings:
Newbiggin Road closure
From Monday 9 June Newbiggin Road between Brisco Road/Wreay Road and J42 of the M6 will be closed until Friday 12 December.
During this period, Newbiggin Road and the car park and public right of way will be completely closed to all traffic, including vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, and horses. No through route will be available due to the nature of the work required.
A diversion route will be available via Durdar Road, Blackwell Road, St Nicholas and London Road: https://one.network/?GB142470112
Access to residential properties and farmland will be restricted:
- From June – September access to Newbiggin Hall and other residential properties will be maintained via J42. The work required does not allow for a route through the site.
- From October – December access to Newbiggin Hall and other residential properties will be maintained via Brisco. The work required does not allow for a route through the site.
M6 Junction 42 Northbound off-slip closure
From Monday 9 June until Friday 4 July the M6 Junction 42 off-slip will be completely closed to all traffic. The work required does not allow for a route off the Motorway.
Northbound M6 traffic wishing to access Carlisle via J42 will be diverted up to J43, returning to J42 using the southbound M6. https://one.network/?GB142733283
Buckabank Road reopening
Buckabank Road to Durdar will reopen on 23 June 2025. The work here has been extended due to the ongoing issues with existing utilities in the area, including pipes and cables.
Ivegill Road reopening
Ivegill Road is closed between Durdar and Stoneraise School and will reopen on 23 June 2025. Works on the new Redcat Roundabout will commence on the 25 June 2025. Our contractors will return to install the footpath and drainage works needed for the school later in the year once the works on Redcat Roundabout are complete.
Burthwaite Road closure
Burthwaite Road will not close until the Ivegill Road has reopened and we are ready to commence work on the Burthwaite Road. There will be a short period when both routes are open - we expect the closure of the Burthwaite Road to commence on the 27 July 2025.
Newby West Roundabout progress
Works are progressing well at Newby West Roundabout. The removal of the existing carriageway has been completed on schedule, in line with the programme. Bulk earthworks are advancing supported by the recent weather conditions.
Drainage contractors are now on site, and the old culvert is currently being removed following the successful re-routing of Fairy Beck into the newly installed culvert beneath the A595.
The roundabout remains on track for the roundabout to reopen by the end of August.
