Work on the Carlisle Southern Link Road (CSLR) continues to progress at pace as we move closer to the completion of this infrastructure project for Carlisle and the wider region.
Key Achievements for September:
- Newby West Roundabout Reopened: A major milestone was reached with the reopening of the upgraded Newby West Roundabout on 8 September. This larger, higher-capacity roundabout will significantly improve traffic flow and journey times at peak periods.
- Caldew Crossing Progress: The temporary bridge over the Caldew was removed this month, which had given us direct access across the river to build the western pier of the new Caldew Crossing. There’s still plenty of work ahead, but with the scaffolding now down you can really start to see the new bridge taking shape. If you’d like to take a look yourself, the footpath along the Caldew remains open to the public. The final concrete deck pours for the Caldew Crossing are scheduled for completion this month, marking another critical step toward connecting the route.
- Advancing Works Between Brisco and M6 J42: Earthworks, drainage, and surfacing continue, alongside landscaping and planting where possible.
- Active Travel Features: Installation of shared-use paths and green corridors is ongoing, ensuring safer and greener travel options for walking, wheeling, and cycling.
Upcoming and Ongoing Road Closures:
- Newbiggin Road Closure: Continues until 7 November 2025 between Brisco Road/Wreay Road and M6 J42. Diversion routes remain in place via Durdar Road, Blackwell Road, St Nicholas, and London Road.
Supporting our communities:
Eden Valley Hospice:
Cumberland Council is delighted to announce Eden Valley Hospice has been awarded funding through the CSLR Trust, a community grant fund provided by principal contractor Galliford Try Infrastructure as part of the Carlisle Southern Link Road project.
The funding will be used to purchase durable and wheelchair accessible outdoor furniture, including bike shelters garden dining sets and accessible tables. These improvements will ensure service users and visitors can enjoy the outdoor spaces in comfort and safety.
In addition, part of the funding will support the Volunteer Appreciation event. A celebration of the incredible volunteers who give their time and dedication to supporting the hospice and wider community.
We look forward to following and supporting Eden Valley Hospice’s journey as they transform their outdoor space into an even more welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone.
Carlisle Youth Zone:
Carlisle Youth Zone (CYZ) has been awarded funding from the CSLR Trust, part of the Carlisle Southern Link Road project delivered by Galliford Try Infrastructure.
This support will help renovate CYZ’s activity space — creating a fresh, welcoming environment where young people can:
