Changes planned to improve Carlisle waste collections

Carlisle waste and recycling roadshows

Thousands of households in Carlisle will soon have their waste collected using wheeled bins rather than seagull-proof sacks.

Although the majority of households in the Cumberland area already have waste bin collections, a small percentage have seagull-proof sack collections.

From March 2026, households that can accommodate the bins will change to fortnightly collections, making them the same as other areas.

Letters have been sent to affected householders and waste and recycling support and advice roadshows have been organised in early January.

Events will be held on the following dates, in these locations:

  • Monday 5 January, 10.30am - 7.30pm: The Parlour, Wigton Road Methodist Church Carlisle, CA2 7BJ.

  • Wednesday 7 January, 10.30am - 5pm: Brampton Community Centre, Union Lane, Brampton, CA8 1BX.

  • Thursday 8 January, 8.30am - 1.30pm: Greystone Community Centre, Close Street, Carlisle, CA1 2HA.

  • Monday 12 January, 9am - 3.30pm: Denton Holme Community Centre, 1 Morley Street, Carlisle, CA2 5HQ.

Residents are advised to check their online waste and recycling calendars at www.cumberland.gov.uk/waste/binday

The expansion of the wheeled bins is part of the council’s plans to provide a more efficient and improved service.
