Cumberland Council has launched a new specialist support service for adults who are d/Deaf, hard of hearing, or living with dual sensory loss (deafblindness). Delivered in partnership with national Deaf charity BID Services, the initiative is designed to improve access to vital services, promote independence, and enhance the wellbeing of residents across the region.
The service is also available to young people aged 16 and 17 who are transitioning from children to adult services, ensuring continuity of care and support during this important life stage.
Through this new service, individuals can receive tailored advice and practical support to help them navigate everyday challenges. This includes guidance on health and wellbeing, managing finances, finding employment, and accessing public services. For those who are eligible, the service can also provide specialist equipment such as hearing loops and alerting devices to support daily living.
In addition, BID Services will carry out Care Act assessments and work with individuals to develop personalised support plans that reflect their unique needs and goals. BID’s staff are skilled in British Sign Language, enabling Deaf individuals to access services with confidence, communicate clearly, and feel genuinely included.
To ensure accessibility, the service offers flexible appointment options, including;
- Face-to-face meetings
- Remote support via phone or video
- Drop-in sessions
Cumberland Council is encouraging anyone who could benefit from the service or knows someone who might, to get in touch. Referrals can be made by professionals, family members, or individuals themselves. For more information or to make a referral, visit www.bid.org.uk/locations/cumbria
Councillor Lisa Hinton, Cumberland Council Executive Member for Adult Social Care, said;
“We’re proud to be partnering with BID Services to provide essential support for our d/Deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind residents. We understand the barriers many face due to a lack of tailored services, and this initiative is about removing those obstacles, fostering independence, and ensuring equal access to support across Cumberland.”
