First operator has the right ingredients for new coastal cafe

Jay Kirby and Lesley Rourke who will be the cafe manager

The operator has now been agreed for one of West Cumbria’s newest foodie destinations ahead of its opening this Summer.

Redby Coffee will be running the new Promenade café in Maryport. The team already have a successful café and greengrocer in the town, alongside another cafe in Penrith, so are perfectly placed to expand their businesses.

The new Promenade eatery is part of Cumberland Council’s £12 million UK Government-funded regeneration of Maryport and will have amazing views across the Solway Firth. Building work is well underway and will be completed in time for the busy summer season.

Jay Kirby and Jamie Redman, co-owners of Redby Coffee and Freda’s Fruit, Veg and Wholefoods Store, will be taking on the exciting new venture.

Jay said: “We have wanted to open a café on the Promenade for a very long time and cannot wait to get started. It’s the perfect location and we will be making the most of some great local produce. There will be hand-battered fish and chips, ice cream, milkshakes and soup and sandwiches, with another new addition - the perfect croque monsieur.”

Leader of Cumberland Council, Cllr Mark Fryer, added:

“The Promenade café is a key part of the regeneration of Maryport and is going to be an amazing destination for locals and visitors alike.

“We have already improved connections between the Prom and the town centre with the creation of the Boardwalk accessible walkway. We are just about to open the new outdoor event space on the harbourside. We have already completed the new and improved Shiver Me Timbers play area and the Maryport Activity Centre, and that is all in addition to the work in the town centre to improve public realm and shopfronts, and bring buildings like the Carlton, Christ Church and Maryport Town Hall back to life.

“I wish Jay and the team every success with the new café and cannot wait to visit for some great food and drink.”
