Cumberland Council is inviting residents and businesses to a Meet the Contractor event to hear first-hand about the exciting regeneration projects taking shape in Workington.
The drop-in session will take place on Thursday 18 September 2025 at the Carnegie Theatre, Finkle Street, Workington (CA14 2BD) from 2.00pm to 6.30pm.
The event will give people the chance to meet the teams delivering two major schemes: the Town Centre Public Realm and Connectivity Project and the Workington Gateway Project.
Together, these projects form a key part of more than £33 million in central government funding secured by Cumberland Council to boost economic development and regeneration in Workington. This investment will be used to improve the town centre public realm, strengthen transport links, support growth in manufacturing and clean energy, encourage local business and entrepreneurship, and deliver new and improved sports facilities.
The projects also align with the Town Investment Plan, complement investment at the Port of Workington, and contribute to the government’s clean growth and maritime agenda.
Residents and businesses attending will be able to:
- Meet the contractors face-to-face
- Learn about construction timelines and processes
- Ask questions and share feedback
- Discuss specific needs such as business deliveries and local access
The council is particularly encouraging people from key parts of the town to attend, including residents and businesses on Murray Road, Central Way, Washington Square, Finkle Street, Warwick Place, Upton Street, Lismore Place, Ramsay Brow, Hall Park View, Washington Street/Bridge Street, and Wilson Street. Local businesses with an interest in working with the council and contractors on future capital projects are also invited.
Representatives from Story Contracting Ltd will be available to discuss the Workington Gateway Project, while Thomas Armstrong Ltd will provide information on the Town Centre Public Realm and Connectivity Project.
These projects form part of a wider regeneration programme in Workington, which also includes the Innovation Centre, the Port of Workington Logistics and Energy Hub, new cycleways, activities in Hall Park, and the proposed Cumberland Sports Village.
Cllr Mark Fryer, Leader of Cumberland Council, said:
“This is a really exciting time for Workington. These regeneration projects will not only transform how the town looks and feels, but also create opportunities for local businesses, strengthen connections, and provide improved spaces for our community. We encourage everyone to come along, meet the contractors, and find out more.”
