Cumberland Council will begin essential works to replace Pow Wath Bridge, near Great Orton, on Monday 18 August 2025.
The existing bridge, currently under a temporary 7.5-tonne weight restriction, will be replaced with a durable precast concrete structure, removing the need for any weight limit in the future.
The project is expected to take around eight weeks, with completion expected by Friday 10 October 2025. Updates will be provided throughout the works, including confirmation of the reopening date.
Schedule of works:
- 18 to 19 August: United Utilities will carry out preparatory works.
- From 20 August: Metcalfe Plant Hire Ltd will undertake the main construction phase.
To ensure the project is carried out safely and efficiently, a full road closure will be implemented at the site and will remain in place for the duration of the construction period.
There will be no access for vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists through the site while works are ongoing.
The council asks all road users to follow the diversion signage and use alternative routes. These restrictions are essential to ensure the safety of both the public and construction personnel. The full map of works including diversion routes can be viewed on One Network.
