Cumberland Council is planning to introduce a brand-new Puffin Crossing on the A597, Church Road/Main Road in Harrington – a step forward in making the area safer and more welcoming for pedestrians.
The crossing is designed to give local people, particularly schoolchildren, a safer and easier way to cross this busy route, responding directly to longstanding concerns raised by the community.
Work is due to start on 26 October 2025, with temporary traffic signals in place for around two weeks to keep the installation running smoothly and safely.
Cumberland Council is encouraging residents and road users to share their views on the proposal before the scheme moves ahead. Feedback can be sent by email to TrafficTeam@cumberland.gov.uk or by post to the Highways Depot, Joseph Noble Road, Lillyhall, Workington, CA14 4JH, by 3 October 2025.
Cllr Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:
"We’re committed to making Cumberland’s streets safer and more accessible for everyone. This Puffin Crossing will make a real difference to families, children, and all those who walk through Harrington.
“We’d love to hear what residents think, so please get in touch and share your views."
