VISITORS to Silloth will be able to find out more about the town's military history thanks to investment from a Community Panel.
The Fells and Solway panel, which channels Cumberland Council's community investment, has given Silloth Toursim Action Group £4,568. The money will be used to buy five information boards for a Military Trail. They will be placed at Grune Point, The Green, Causewayhead Cemetery, West Beach and Mawbray Banks, enabling visitors and locals to explore the area’s military history.
The panel's Chair, Cllr Tony Markley, said: "It is fantastic to be able to help bring history alive in the lovely town of Silloth. Many visitors may be unaware of its historical links so this is a great addition to the attractions of the town. One of the panel's priorities is about pride in our local area and this project supports that admirably."
Other awards in the latest round of investments from the Fells and Solway panel were:
- £4,500 to help Dalston Recreation Association replace fencing around a play area and football field.
- £3,000 to replace fencing at the Anthorn Community Association Play Area. Last year, a support group raised more than £30,000 for a new play area, and the new fencing will make it a secure and modern place to play.
- £4,500 to Wigton Youth Station to fit insulation and thermostatic radiator valves at their High Street headquarters. This will make the building cheaper to run as well as more comfortable and energy-efficient.
Cumberland Council’s Community Panels give local people a real voice in shaping their neighbourhoods.
There are eight panels across the area, each made up of local councillors and sometimes other community members. They work closely with residents, businesses, and organisations to make sure funding and support is targeted where it is most effective.
By encouraging people to get involved, the panels help ensure decisions reflect what matters most to their communities.
The Fells and Solway Community Panel covers the wards of Dalston and Burgh, Solway Coast, Thursby, Aspatria and Wigton.
