Support for unpaid carers in Cumberland

Two men sat outside at pub one with beer, one coffee, look at mobile phone

From today, unpaid carers are able to access universal services across Cumberland. This means that, wherever someone lives in our area, they’ll have access to the same level of help and advice.

Unpaid carers help people in different ways such as with personal care, meal preparation, managing bills and finances, collecting prescriptions and administering or prompting medication.

What’s changing?

From October, new providers are supporting unpaid carers in Cumberland. Unpaid adult carers will be supported by People First, and young carers will be supported by Family Action. These organisations have been working closely with Cumberland Council to make sure carers who were being supported by other organisations can continue to access the support they need.

24/7 support through Mobilise

One of the biggest changes is the introduction of round-the-clock support through Mobilise – an online platform offering practical advice, self-help, peer support, and one-to-one coaching for carers. It’s available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, making it easier for carers to get help when it suits them.

Why this matters

Unpaid carers play a vital role in our communities, often juggling work, family life, and caring responsibilities. We want to continue to improve support for unpaid carers and help those who may not recognise that they are an unpaid carer, so that all unpaid carers get the support they need, when they need it.
