Think Before You Park – the sheep are watching!

Cumberland Council is reminding visitors to the area’s scenic beauty spots—particularly around Stonethwaite and Wasdale—to park responsibly and with consideration for others.

Stonethwaite, a well-loved destination near the iconic Black Moss Pot pool, and the picturesque Wasdale Valley often sees high visitor numbers. Unfortunately, inconsiderate parking has become a recurring issue, causing obstruction and inconvenience to local residents, farmers, and emergency services.

Visitors are urged to park safely, sensibly, and legally—leaving enough space for emergency vehicles and farm access on narrow roads.

A coordinated patrol approach is also being implemented in the Borrowdale Valley to help manage visitor behaviour and protect both the community and the environment.

In support of sustainable tourism and reduced vehicle congestion, the council is progressing plans to expand its shuttle bus trials in 2025. The Buttermere Shuttle will run every weekend and bank holiday throughout May, June, July, and August and will have a small fee to get on board.

Meanwhile, the Wasdale Explorer, developed with the Wasdale Action Group, will run more frequently this year and will be FREE to use, supported by Cumberland Council. Launching on Good Friday, it will operate every weekend and bank holiday until 21 September.

Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:

“We want everyone to enjoy our outstanding area, but people must take responsibility when parking. On narrow roads, poor parking can force pedestrians onto the carriageway, putting them at risk from traffic.

“It’s also essential that emergency vehicles and farmers can pass through at all times. A blocked road could delay emergency help or disrupt vital agricultural work.

“We also want to remind visitors that public transport options are available. Why not take advantage of our shuttle bus services and make your weekend even more relaxing? You can avoid the stress of driving and parking—after all, health and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we do.

“We appreciate the public’s cooperation. By working together, we can make the area safer and more accessible for everyone. Before parking, please take a moment to think.”
