Residents and visitors are being encouraged to attend a special event in Carlisle later this month to mark Armed Forces Day.
The event will take place in the city centre pedestrianised area on Saturday, 27 June, between 10am and 4pm, bringing together a wide range of local organisations to recognise the contribution of the UK’s Armed Forces – past, present and future.
Organised by Cumberland Council, with support from local armed forces organisations, the event will feature representatives from across the armed forces community and partner organisations.
Organisations represented will include: the Cumbria Museum of Military Life, Lancs Association Branch, Cumbria Army Cadet Force, Cumbria Police, Age UK North Cumbria, Carlisle Sea Cadets, RAF Air Cadets, Solway Aviation Society, Royal British Legion, Armed Forces Careers Office Carlisle, SSAFA Cumbria branch, Carlisle United Sports Trust, RAF Spadeadam, The RAF Association, The Military Vehicle Trust, Sport In Action and Cumberland Council.
The Armed Forces Day programme will include live music provided by the Border Concert Band.
The event will also include a drill competition between the Army Cadets and the Royal Air Force Cadets, offering a chance to see both services on display.
As part of the wider Armed Forces Week activity, an Armed Forces flag will be raised at the Old Town Hall at 12 noon on Monday 22 June, marking the start of the week’s commemorations. Chair of Cumberland Council, Councillor Andy Semple will speak during the event about the council’s continued commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community.
The week will conclude on the day of the event with a flag-lowering ceremony from 3pm on 27 June, attended by civic representatives including the Mayor of Carlisle, Anne Glendinning, the Lord Lieutenant’s representative, and the President of the Royal British Legion (Carlisle and Stanwix branch).
People are also encouraged to look out for additional events taking place locally, with parish and town councils sharing details online and through social media.
