Bridge deck replacement works set to begin at Bridekirk Bridge, Cockermouth

Highways sign

Cumberland Council will begin a bridge deck replacement on the U2093 at Bridekirk Bridge, Bridekirk, Cockermouth on Tuesday 1 September 2026, with works expected to take approximately three weeks, subject to weather and site conditions.

To allow the works to be completed safely, the route will be closed continuously for the duration of the scheme and a signed diversion route will be in place. The bridge deck replacement is an important maintenance project that will help ensure the long-term safety and resilience of the structure.

During the closure, access through the work site will not be possible, including for emergency service vehicles, pedestrians and dismounted cyclists. A signed diversion route will be clearly marked throughout the duration of the works.

These essential maintenance works will help preserve Bridekirk Bridge and ensure it remains safe and reliable for the future.

We understand road closures can be inconvenient and would like to thank residents and road users for their patience while this important work is carried out.

Residents with any questions about the scheme or who have special access requirements are encouraged to contact Cumberland Council’s Highways Hotline on 0300 373 3736 or visit the council website.
