The deadline for people to put forward land for consideration as part of the new Cumberland Local Plan has been extended to 30 November 2026.
Cumberland Council is inviting residents, landowners, developers and other interested parties to identify sites they would like to see either developed for a particular use or protected in the future.
The Call for Sites will help the council understand what land may be available across the Cumberland Local Plan area and assess which locations could be suitable for different uses as the new Local Plan is developed.
Sites can be put forward for a wide range of potential uses, including:
• Residential
• Retail
• Commercial and industrial
• Leisure
• Open space, community use and greenspace
• Health
• Transport
• Utilities infrastructure
• Habitat creation
• Allotments
• Education
• Burial grounds
• Traveller and Showman pitches
• Minerals and waste, for which separate submission forms are available
Sites must be within the Cumberland Local Plan area, which excludes St Cuthbert’s Garden Village and the Lake District National Park as these are covered by separate Local Plans.
As this will be a new Local Plan for Cumberland, sites previously submitted to the former Allerdale Borough Council, Carlisle City Council, Copeland Borough Council or Cumbria County Council must be submitted again through the current process. However, sites submitted during the first Cumberland Call for Sites in 2025 do not need to be resubmitted and are already feeding into the Local Plan assessment process.
Councillor Bob Kelly, Cumberland Council's Executive Member for Environment and Planning, said:
“The new Local Plan will help shape how Cumberland grows and develops in the years ahead, and having a clear understanding of the land that may be available is an important part of that process.
“Extending the deadline gives people more time to put forward sites for a wide range of potential uses, helping us build the evidence we need to consider future needs and opportunities across Cumberland.”
