Carlisle Library Transformation Marked with Official Opening Celebration

Official Opening Carlisle Library

Cumberland Council has officially celebrated the transformation of Carlisle Library with an opening ceremony, following the library's successful public reopening in August.

Guests were invited to explore the transformed building and experience the wide range of services now available. The evening included guided tours, demonstrations of digital archive services, showcases of children's and family activities, presentations from Adult Learning, and opportunities to discover more about the renowned Jackson Collection, which now has a permanent home within the library.

A highlight of the evening was the official unveiling of the new M.W. Craven Room, named in recognition of Carlisle-born and internationally acclaimed crime writer M.W. Craven. Guests gathered for a special unveiling ceremony, during which Mike spoke about the importance of libraries, reading and creativity, before the room was officially revealed. The dedicated space will provide a lasting tribute to one of Cumbria's most successful authors and inspire future generations of readers and writers.

The celebration featured speeches from Cumberland Council representatives and project partners, recognising the collaborative effort that delivered the refurbishment and thanking everyone involved in bringing the project to life. Guests also enjoyed canapés and refreshments provided by local business Food at Broadway.

Cumberland Councillor Anne Quilter, Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places, said:

"It was wonderful to see so many people come together to celebrate the official opening of Carlisle Library. This transformation has created a modern, welcoming and accessible community space where people of all ages can read, learn, develop new skills and connect with others.

"The library has already received a fantastic response from residents, and it is clear this investment will benefit the people of Carlisle for many years to come. I'd like to thank everyone who played a role in delivering this remarkable project and helping create a library fit for the future."

The refurbished library is set to play a key role as a modern hub for learning, culture and community life in the heart of Carlisle.
