The Civic Hall in Whitehaven has now fully reopened following the completion of essential safety improvements.
In May, Cumberland Council, jointly with the tenants of the hall, took the decision to temporarily close the building to undertake the necessary works, relating specifically to fire safety.
These improvements have now been successfully carried out, and the scheduled events programme in the building can now resume. While the building was closed, the council also took the opportunity to address some asbestos-related issues on the site. The council owns the freehold of the Lowther Street building and leases it to the Rosehill Youth Theatre trust who operate it, including its principal events space; The Solway Hall.
A council spokesperson said: “We’d like to thank the local community for their patience while these essential works have been carried out, and the building has been closed. Taking the decision to temporarily close the venue wasn’t one we made lightly but keeping staff, tenants and members of the public safe was our top priority.
“With the safety improvements now complete, we’d like to encourage Cumberland’s residents to support the venue and the events planned there over the coming weeks and months.”
The building’s longer-term future will be considered as part of the work to develop a masterplan for Whitehaven. The Whitehaven Masterplan sets a bold, strategic direction and aims to create a thriving, sustainable town that celebrates its history while embracing a dynamic future.
