Residents, supporters and stakeholders will soon have the opportunity to find out more about the Cumberland Sports Village project.
Members of the project team will be attending local sporting fixtures to answer questions and share information about the development.
The team will be attending Workington Reds’ home fixture against Guiseley at the Fibrus Community Stadium on 15 August, followed by Workington Town’s men’s and women’s home fixtures against Rochdale Hornets on 16 August.
The engagement events will provide the latest information on the project, including progress to date, key milestones, updated CGI visualisations and the delivery programme as plans continue to advance towards construction beginning in January 2027.
The project has continued to make significant progress in recent months.
A reserved matters planning application has been submitted which incorporates Phase 2 of the development into the overall scheme. Phase 2 includes expanding the main stand to a capacity of 5,000 spectators. This approach will help create a more robust and future-proofed development that supports the long-term vision for Cumberland Sports Village.
Detailed design work is also progressing following the completion of site surveys earlier this summer, ensuring the scheme is fully developed and ready to move towards construction. This will be completed by September 2026.
The procurement process to appoint a main contractor is now underway, marking another important step towards the delivery of the project. Planning is also progressing for enabling works, with activity expected to begin on site later this year. These early works will prepare the site for the main construction programme, which is scheduled to commence in January 2027
Alongside the engagement events, the project website - www.cumberland.gov.uk/CumberlandSportsVillage - is being updated to provide easy access to the latest information, including project updates, CGI visualisations, key milestones and the delivery programme.

The project is supported by the UK Government Town Deal, Cumberland Council, Cumbria Combined Authority and Football Foundation and the revised scheme will be project managed and delivered by Cumberland Council.
The new stadium will be shared by Workington Town RLFC and Workington AFC, who are known as Workington Reds. They continue to be closely involved in the project.
