Cumberland Council Provides Update on Irish Gate Footbridge Closure

Irish Gate Bridge

Cumberland Council is updating residents following the temporary closure of the Irish Gate Footbridge (Millenium Bridge) in Carlisle.

A structural defect was identified during routine inspection work, prompting engineers to close the bridge as a precaution.

A crack was found in one of the steel components that supports the bridge deck. While the footbridge is currently closed, there is no risk to users of Castle Way, and the road below remains fully open.

Specialist engineers will now carry out detailed investigations to understand the extent of the issue and determine the most appropriate next steps. It is too early to provide a reopening timescale, but public safety remains the council’s priority throughout.

Further updates will be shared as more information becomes available, and the council appreciates the public’s patience while this work takes place.
