Cumberland Council has published an updated timetable for the preparation of its new Local Plan, alongside a formal Notice to Commence Plan Making, in line with updated government regulations introduced earlier this year.
The changes follow the publication of new government regulations that came into force on 25 March 2026, requiring all local authorities to revise the way Local Plans are prepared and progressed.
The Cumberland Local Plan is a key statutory document that will set out the long-term vision, policies and framework for development and land use across Cumberland. Having an up-to-date plan in place is essential to ensure that future growth is well managed and supported by appropriate infrastructure, services and facilities.
The Notice to Commence Plan Making marks the start of the formal plan-making process and signals the Council’s intention to begin work on the new Local Plan. It is being issued ahead of the first stage of public consultation, known as the scoping consultation, which is scheduled to take place in September 2026.
Publishing the Notice ensures that residents, businesses and stakeholders are aware of the process and understand when and how they can get involved. The Council is committed to engaging communities at every stage as the plan develops, helping to shape a sustainable and deliverable vision for Cumberland’s future.
