Cumberland families are being invited to donate children’s and young people’s books to a new county-wide scheme led by Cumberland Family Hubs, helping more children discover the joy of reading and book ownership.
Residents can donate good-quality used books at selected libraries or their nearest Cumberland Family Hub. Donated books will be made available through local services so that children and young people can choose books to take home and keep.
The scheme supports the National Year of Reading and encourages reading for pleasure, an important foundation for children’s confidence, wellbeing and learning.
Please donate good-quality books that are clean and undamaged. If you’d feel comfortable giving the book to a child you know, it’s suitable to donate.
Cllr Elaine Lynch, Portfolio Holder for Lifelong Learning and Development at Cumberland Council said:
“As a former teacher I understand the power of reading in shaping a child’s future. Books can help open doors, spark imagination and build confidence which was definitely true for me. One of my greatest pleasures as a child was reading and visiting my local library in Aspatria."
“This scheme is a simple way for families across Cumberland to pass on books they no longer need and help another child enjoy a story of their own. If you have children’s books at home that your family has grown out of, please consider dropping them off at your local Family Hub or one of the participating libraries. Every donated book helps us reach more families and make reading part of everyday life.”
Books can be donated at donation points in:
