Cumberland Council has successfully completed the Dow Beck (Caldewgate) Culvert strengthening scheme in Carlisle, marking an important milestone in improving the long-term resilience of this key infrastructure asset.
The works began on 3 August and were originally expected to take around four weeks to complete. Thanks to excellent progress on site, all planned works were completed on 18 August, significantly ahead of schedule.
The scheme involved strengthening works to the existing culvert structure to improve its long-term resilience. These improvements will ensure the culvert continues to operate safely and reliably for years to come.
All traffic management associated with the works has now been removed and the route has fully reopened, restoring normal access for residents, businesses and road users.
Councillor Denise Rollo, Cumberland Council's Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:
"We're pleased to have completed these important strengthening works ahead of schedule. The improvements will help protect and preserve this key piece of infrastructure for the future while ensuring it continues to serve the local community safely and reliably.

The council would also like to thank contractors, project partners, local stakeholders and the wider community for their support and cooperation throughout the scheme.
The successful completion of the works represents another investment in maintaining and improving Cumberland's highway infrastructure, helping to keep the network safe, resilient and fit for the future.
