Cumberland Council is set to carry out essential carriageway resurfacing works on the A69 Warwick Road in Carlisle to help keep the road safe and in good condition for road users.
To minimise disruption to daytime traffic, residents and businesses, the works have been scheduled to take place during the evening and overnight period when traffic levels are lower.
The works will take place between the Tesco junction and Tilbury Road and are scheduled to begin on Sunday 18 October 2026, subject to weather and site conditions.
The scheme will be delivered in two phases to allow resurfacing to be carried out safely and efficiently.
Phase 1 – Tesco Junction
Works will begin on Sunday 18 October at the Tesco junction. Four-way temporary traffic signals will be in place between 4.30pm and 1.00am while the resurfacing works are carried out.
Phase 2 – Montgomery Way to Tilbury Road
From Monday 19 October to Friday 23 October, works will move to the section between Montgomery Way and Tilbury Road. Evening road closures will be in place between 7.00pm and 1.00am each night.
During Phase 2, a signed diversion route will be in place. HGV traffic will be diverted via the M6 and A6 London Road, while local traffic will be diverted via Montgomery Way and Durranhill Road.
The council will aim to remove the traffic management by 3.00am each morning to allow for site clearance and for the newly laid material to cure before the road is reopened.
The improvements form part of Cumberland Council's ongoing programme of highway maintenance works across the area, helping to improve road conditions and extend the life of the carriageway.
Access for emergency service vehicles, pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained throughout the works. Access to Toby Carvery will also be maintained and clearly signed throughout the scheme.
Residents who live within the works area and require access are encouraged to speak with site staff, who will do their best to assist.
The council apologises in advance for any disruption these works may cause and thanks residents, businesses and road users for their patience and cooperation while the improvements are completed.
