Essential Resurfacing Works on B5289 and C2030 Near Lorton

Cumberland Council will begin essential carriageway resurfacing works on the B5289 between Low Lorton and Whitbeck Bridge, and on the C2030 between Brackenthwaite and Low Liza Bridge, starting Monday 9 February 2026. 

These works form part of the council’s ongoing commitment to maintain and improve the local highway network.

To ensure the safety of both the workforce and the public, all works will be carried out under a full road closure, with signed diversion routes in place throughout the programme.

Programme of works:
The scheme will be delivered in two phases:

Phase 1 - B5289: Low Lorton to Whitbeck Bridge
Monday 9 February – Friday 13 February

Phase 2 - C2030: Brackenthwaite to Low Liza Bridge
Monday 16 February – Friday 20 February

The works are expected to take up to two weeks, subject to weather and site conditions.

Access arrangements:

  • No vehicular access will be permitted within the work areas during working hours (7.30am–7.00pm).
  • Access will be maintained at all times for emergency services, pedestrians, and dismounted cyclists.
  • Resident access will be restricted during working hours; however, traffic marshals will be available to assist where possible.
  • Refuse collections will continue where it is safe to do so.
