Final phase of footway improvements set to begin in St Bees

Cumberland Council is set to complete footway resurfacing improvements along the B5345 Main Street and Egremont Road in St Bees.

The works will be carried out by Cumberland Council’s contractor, DSD Construction Limited, and will begin on Monday 2 November 2026. The works are expected to take around two weeks to complete, with a three-week programme in place to provide flexibility should weather conditions affect progress.

The works will be carried out under a road closure and will take place in three phases:

  • Phase 1 – Day 1: Egremont Road to Nethertown Road
  • Phase 2 – Days 2 to 5: Nethertown Road to Outrigg junction
  • Phase 3 – Days 6 to 10: Outrigg junction to Finkle Street

The road closure will remain in place 24 hours a day throughout the duration of the works, with contractor working hours between 7.00am and 6.00pm. At the end of each working day and over weekends, the site will be made safe and access will be permitted for residents and businesses wherever it is practical and safe to do so.

Access will be maintained for emergency service vehicles, pedestrians and dismounted cyclists throughout the works, while waste and recycling collections will continue as usual.

Bus services will continue to operate during the works, although some routes and stopping arrangements will be affected. During Phases 1 and 2, services will be diverted via Outrigg Close. During Phase 3, services will terminate at St Bees Beach before returning to Whitehaven. Temporary bus stop information will be displayed at affected stops, and passengers are encouraged to contact Stagecoach for the latest service information.

We would like to thank residents, businesses and the wider community in St Bees for their continued patience and support while these improvements are completed.

We appreciate that road closures can cause disruption, and we apologise for any inconvenience while our contractor carries out this final phase of work.
