Residents in Carlisle will benefit from essential resurfacing improvements on two key residential roads this September, as Cumberland Council continues to invest in maintaining and improving the local highway network.
The improvements will take place on:
- Etterby Road, between Kingmoor Road and Riverbank Court, from Monday 14 September, with works expected to take up to five days to complete.
- Lightfoot Drive, between Petteril Bank Road and Dale End Road, also starting on Monday 14 September, with works expected to take up to fifteen days to complete.
All works are subject to weather and site conditions and will be carried out between 8.00am and 5.00pm each day.
At Lightfoot Drive, the scheme will be delivered in two phases to minimise disruption and maintain access to Petteril Bank Community School:
- Phase 1: Petteril Bank Road to Meade Road
- Phase 2: Meade Road to Dale End Road
These improvements will help maintain the condition of the roads, extend their lifespan and provide smoother, safer journeys for residents and road users.
The schemes form part of Cumberland Council's wider £27.3 million investment in highways for 2026/27, including £2.85 million dedicated to residential and rural roads. The investment supports a range of improvements across the network, including pothole repairs, road resurfacing, drainage enhancements, footway and cycleway upgrades, bridge maintenance and other critical infrastructure improvements, helping to create a safer, more resilient and better-connected transport network for communities.
To allow the works to be completed safely and efficiently, temporary road closures will be in place during the resurfacing operations. Clearly signed diversion routes will be available for motorists.
During working hours, vehicle access to and from properties within the closure areas will not be possible while surfacing works are taking place. Residents requiring access during the day are encouraged to speak with the site teams, who will do their best to accommodate requests where it is safe and practical to do so. Some delays may be unavoidable depending on the stage of the works.
On-street parking within the closure areas will not be available during working hours.
Access for emergency service vehicles, pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained throughout both schemes. Waste and recycling collections will continue as normal, and access to Petteril Bank Community School will be maintained throughout the Lightfoot Drive works due to the phased approach being adopted.
Cumberland Council understands that roadworks can cause temporary inconvenience and will make every effort to minimise disruption while these important improvements are completed.
