Cumberland Council is pleased to announce that Carlisle Library will reopen on Tuesday 4 August, welcoming residents back to a transformed space designed for learning, creativity and community connection.
More than just a refurbished building, the new Carlisle Library has been reimagined as a place where residents of all ages can learn, discover, connect and thrive. The modern, welcoming environment will bring together library services, digital access, study facilities and adult learning opportunities, creating a vibrant hub for lifelong learning and community engagement.
The £3.3 million transformation, funded through the UK Government's Carlisle Town Deal with additional investment from Cumberland Council, has included significant structural works, rewiring, infrastructure upgrades, and the installation of new technology and facilities. The result is a library fit for the future, designed to meet the changing needs of residents while continuing to champion the joy of reading, learning and discovery.
When the doors reopen, visitors will be able to enjoy a wide range of new and enhanced facilities, including:
- A vibrant children's zone featuring books, digital resources and welcoming spaces for young readers.
- Comfortable social areas where people can relax, meet and connect.
- Adult learning classrooms supporting digital literacy courses, skills development and practical workshops.
- Dedicated study spaces with private desks, charging points and digital resources.
- The renowned Jackson Collection, featuring thousands of rare and historic items dating back to the 1600s.
The revised opening date has allowed the final stages of this ambitious transformation to be completed, ensuring residents can enjoy the full range of facilities, technology and learning opportunities from day one.
Alison Graham, Cumberland Council Assistant Director of Customer Solutions said:
"We know many residents are looking forward to returning to Carlisle Library and discovering everything the transformed building has to offer."
"This investment is about much more than improving a building. We've created a modern, accessible and welcoming space where people can borrow books, gain new skills, access digital services, continue their learning journey and connect with others in their community."
"Libraries play a vital role at the heart of our communities, supporting people at every stage of life. Whether you're visiting with your family, studying for exams, exploring local history, developing new skills through adult learning or simply enjoying a good book, Carlisle Library will be a place for life and learning."
Throughout the refurbishment, library services have continued to operate from a temporary location on the third floor of the current building, accessible via Level 3 of The Lanes car park, ensuring residents have maintained access to essential services.
The library transformation forms part of Carlisle's wider £19.7 million Town Deal Investment Plan, which is also helping deliver improvements across the city, including the Carlisle Southern Gateway project and enhancements at Tullie. Together, these investments demonstrate a shared commitment to supporting Carlisle's future growth, prosperity and cultural development.
Residents are encouraged to visit the newly transformed Carlisle Library when it opens on Tuesday 4 August and discover the exciting facilities, resources and opportunities on offer.
