Cumberland Council's Carlisle Library has welcomed hundreds of residents since reopening last week, with families, community groups and visitors of all ages enjoying free activities in the transformed building.
The opening celebrations have showcased the library's impressive new facilities and highlighted its role as a welcoming community space for reading, learning, creativity and connection. The transformed library provides opportunities for people of all ages to access learning, technology, activities and community support in the heart of the city.
Throughout the week, the library has been buzzing with activity. Children and families have enjoyed magic shows, dancing, balloon modelling, face painting, crafts, LEGO challenges and storytimes, alongside special visits from Peter Rabbit and Ruby the dog. Visitors of all ages have also taken part in creative sessions, enjoyed live music performances and explored the library's modern new spaces.
The refurbishment has also created a range of new spaces and facilities to support learning, study and discovery. Residents can access dedicated adult learning classrooms for digital literacy courses, skills development and practical workshops,
The flexible new spaces have also been designed to support a wider range of community activities, creating opportunities for local organisations, support services and community groups to engage with residents in an accessible and trusted setting.
As well as modern study spaces equipped with private desks, charging points and digital resources. The library also continues to house the renowned Jackson Collection, which features thousands of rare and historic items dating back to the 1600s, preserving an important part of Carlisle's heritage while making it accessible to future generations.
The reopening marks the completion of a £3.3 million transformation funded through the UK Government's Carlisle Town Deal, with additional investment from Cumberland Council.
The project has delivered extensive structural, technological and infrastructure improvements to create a library fit for the future. Alongside significant refurbishment works, around £1.1 million was invested in mechanical and electrical infrastructure, including upgrades to heating and hot water systems, lighting, fire safety, security, access controls, data networks and specialist building systems.
Together, these improvements provide modern, reliable facilities that support Carlisle Library's role as a contemporary Digital Community Hub. Alongside its traditional library services, the building offers flexible spaces where residents can access learning opportunities, digital support, community activities and other services that contribute to healthier, more connected communities.
