Work is set to begin on a new play area in Bransty, Whitehaven, as part of Cumberland Council’s commitment to improving play facilities for children and families across the area.

Installation of the new play area at Harbour View is scheduled to start in mid-October and is expected to take around six weeks to complete.

Fully funded by Cumberland Council, the play area will be located overlooking Whitehaven harbour and the Irish Sea. Inspired by Whitehaven’s maritime heritage and coastal setting, the design will give the play area a distinctive local character.

The community were invited to have their say on the proposals in January 2026 and feedback received through the consultation has shaped the choice equipment and overall design of the new play area.

Designed specifically for children aged up to six, a mix of dynamic and sensory equipment will provide opportunities for inclusive, imaginative and social play. Among the features will be a bespoke Harbour View role play panel inspired by a local fish and chip shop, adding another connection to the area.

The new play area will sit alongside the existing community garden at Harbour View, which has been developed and maintained by Bransty Community Interest Company.

Cllr Anne Quilter, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places, said:

“It’s fantastic to see work beginning on this new play area for Bransty. Shaped by feedback from local residents, it will create a welcoming and inclusive space where young children can play, explore and spend time with their families.

“Inspired by Whitehaven’s coastal setting, the design will give the play area a real sense of local character, and we hope it will be enjoyed by Bransty families for many years to come.”

The scheme forms part of Cumberland Council’s wider work to improve play areas and provide welcoming, inclusive spaces for children and families across Cumberland.
