New path to improve walking and cycling connections in Carlisle

Work is underway to complete a missing link in Carlisle’s walking, wheeling and cycling network, providing a new route for people travelling between Dalston Road and the existing Carlisle to Dalston Cycleway.

Cumberland Council is delivering approximately 250 metres of new shared-use path on council-owned land off Dalston Road, to the east of Carlisle Cemetery.

The scheme will see two new sections of three-metre-wide asphalt path constructed, creating a continuous surfaced route from Dalston Road to the existing cycleway.

The new path will replace sections through a grassed area which can become muddy and difficult to access during the winter months, providing a more accessible and reliable route throughout the year for people walking, wheeling and cycling.

Work began on Monday 19 October and is expected to take approximately three weeks to complete. Pedestrian and cycle access through the area will be maintained throughout the works.

Construction will take place on weekdays between 7.30am and 5.30pm.

The scheme is being delivered by Carlisle-based contractor Kirkaldy & Roe Ltd and is funded through the UK Government's Local Transport Grant.

Cllr Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places at Cumberland Council, said:

“This is a relatively small scheme, but it will make an important improvement to Carlisle’s walking and cycling network by completing a missing link between Dalston Road and the existing Carlisle to Dalston Cycleway.

“By providing a properly surfaced route, we’re making it easier and more accessible for people to walk, wheel and cycle throughout the year, particularly during the wetter winter months.

“These improvements support our ambitions to give people more choice in how they make every day journeys and to create better connected, more accessible places.”

Cumberland Council thanks residents and users of the route for their patience while the improvements are carried out.
