Cumberland Council in partnership with Connect Roads will be carrying out essential carriageway resurfacing works on sections of the A7 near Longtown as part of its ongoing programme of highway improvements.
The first phase of works will take place on the A7 between the Albert Street junction in Longtown and the A6071 Toll Bar Cottage junction. These works are scheduled to begin on Sunday 13 September 2026 and will be carried out over five nights.
The second phase will follow on the A7 between the Albert Street junction in Longtown and Westlinton Bridge, commencing on Sunday 20 September 2026 and continuing for six nights.
To ensure the safety of both the workforce and road users, the resurfacing programme will be carried out under a full overnight road closure between 7.00pm and 6.00am. A clearly signed diversion route will be in place throughout the works.
Access for residents and businesses within the closure area will be maintained. Site personnel will be positioned at closure points and will safely escort residents and businesses through the works when possible. Depending on the nature of activities taking place at the time, there may be a short wait before vehicles can be escorted through the site safely.
Access for emergency service vehicles, pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times.
