Cumberland Council has today [Tuesday 1 September] launched a review of polling stations across the district.
By law, councils must regularly review their polling arrangements to ensure residents have reasonable and accessible facilities for voting. The last full review took place in 2024 and although the next one isn't due until 2029, the council has decided to carry out an interim review to reflect changes arising from recent the recent boundary review, as well as to consider polling stations that are no longer available or suitable.
The next scheduled elections for Cumberland Council are in May 2027, with elections for the new Mayor of Cumbria also due to take place at the same time.
The review affects all wards within Cumberland, although in some areas the changes are minor, such as updates to polling district codes. In other areas, there are proposed changes to polling district boundaries or polling station venues.
As part of the review, the council will consult with local councillors, parish councils, political parties, community organisations and disability groups and members of the public are also invited to get involved and give their views.
Barbara Cannon, Cumberland Council's Executive member for Financial Planning and Assets, said: "Ensuring that local people have the opportunity to cast their votes in polling stations that are in the correct places and have the appropriate facilities is of great importance to the council. I'd encourage everyone with views on polling stations to get involved with this consultation, whether you're a normal elector, a local councillor or representing a special interest group, we'd love to hear from you."
