A refurbishment of the traffic signals at Hardwicke Circus in Carlisle is underway as Cumberland Council invests to improve the reliability and longevity of one of the city's busiest junctions.
The improvement scheme, which began on 28 September and is due to be completed by 16 October 2026, will see existing traffic signal infrastructure upgraded as part of the council's Traffic Signals Capital Programme.
Works include the installation of a new traffic signal controller, replacement traffic signal poles, new LED traffic signal heads and new cabling throughout the junction.
The refurbishment is being delivered by Telent on behalf of Cumberland Council and will help address deterioration of the existing equipment while reducing future maintenance requirements.
Lane closures will be in place when required between 9.00am and 4.30pm to allow the work to be carried out safely. To minimise disruption, lane closures will be removed at weekends and for the Cumbrian Run event on Sunday 4 October.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time for journeys while the works are taking place and to follow all traffic management and signage on site.
