Thanks, and appreciation have been expressed to David Savage, Chair of the Millom Town Deal Board, following the announcement that he will step down from the role at the end of this year.
David has been a member of the Millom Town Deal Board since its inception in 2019 and has served as Chair for the past four years. During that time, he has played a central role in helping to shape the Town Deal and maintaining the momentum behind an ambitious programme of investment for Millom.
Working alongside Board members, Cumberland Council and a wide range of partners, David has helped drive forward a programme of multi-million-pound projects which will leave a lasting legacy for the town.
The Millom Town Deal secured £20.6 million of government investment, alongside £8.7 million in match funding, to deliver four major projects designed to transform Millom and create new opportunities for residents, businesses and visitors.
David said:
“It has been a real privilege to serve as Chair of the Millom Town Deal Board and to play my part in helping to bring this ambitious programme forward.
“I am particularly proud to have seen the new leisure centre and the transformation of the Old Bank building progress to the point where both are set to open this year. These projects represent significant investment in Millom and will make an important contribution to the future vitality and attractiveness of the town.
“There is also exciting progress on the Iron Line and Connecting Millom and Haverigg projects, and I will continue to take a keen interest in their development.
“After many years involved with the Town Deal, I feel the time is right for me to step aside because of growing family commitments and allow a new Chair to take the Board into its next phase.
“I would encourage anyone with a passion for Millom and a willingness to contribute to the town’s future to consider applying for the role. It is a challenging but hugely rewarding opportunity to make a real difference.”
Leader of Cumberland Council, Cllr Mark Fryer, thanked David for his commitment and contribution to the Town Deal and its projects.
He said:
“The Millom Town Deal Board has an important role in supporting the successful delivery of these transformational projects, and I would like to thank David for the considerable time, energy and leadership he has given to the Board.
“His contribution, together with that of all our Board members and partners, has helped maintain the focus on delivering a programme that will provide significant long-term benefits for Millom.
“There is still work to be done, but we are grateful for everything David has done to help get the Town Deal to this important stage.”
The Town Deal projects are being delivered by Cumberland Council, with the Millom Town Deal Board continuing to work with a wide range of stakeholders to support delivery. Key partners have included Sellafield, Copeland Community Fund, NDA, CGP, Millom School and Millom Town Council.
The Millom Town Deal Board meets quarterly, with monthly progress meetings and additional arrangements supporting the governance and delivery of the programme. Its membership brings together expertise from business, education, industry and the community at local and regional levels.
