Update on road improvement works on B5345 Main Street and Egremont Road, St Bees

Cumberland Council highways jacket

Cumberland Council is updating residents on the ongoing road improvement works on the B5345 Main Street and Egremont Road in St Bees, following coordination with utility works being carried out in the area.

After discussions with Northern Gas Networks regarding their current works on Main Street, the council has adjusted its resurfacing programme to allow for the installation of new infrastructure and an upgraded gas supply to properties within Phase 2 of the scheme. As a result, works on Main Street will now extend into mid-April 2026.

While the council recognises that this change may cause inconvenience, completing the gas works first will avoid the need for a newly resurfaced road to be excavated again shortly afterwards.

From Wednesday 25 March, Northern Gas Networks will begin work in Phase 2, between Outrigg Junction and Finkle Street. These works are expected to take approximately four weeks. During this time, Phases 3 and 4 of the scheme will continue as planned under Cumberland Council’s programme.

Once Northern Gas Networks has completed its works, Cumberland Council will return to carry out the carriageway resurfacing for Phase 2.

The overall phase extents remain unchanged, with only the timings adjusted:

  • Phase 1: Station to Cross Hill
  • Phase 2: Cross Hill to Outrigg
  • Phase 3: Outrigg to Townhead Circle
  • Phase 4: Townhead Circle to the south

Access for residents will be restricted during working hours (7.30am to 6.00pm). However, traffic marshals will be on site and will do their best to assist residents in accessing their properties safely whenever possible.

Access for emergency services, pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained at all times, with pedestrians and cyclists escorted safely through the works by traffic marshals.

Waste and recycling collections will continue as normal, with no changes to collection days. For public transport users, temporary bus stops will be provided where required, and any relocated stops will be clearly signposted. Passengers are advised to contact Stagecoach directly for route information.
