Work is now underway on the next phase of the Cumberland Sports Village in Workington, marking another important step forward for the major sports and community development.

Enabling works have begun at the Borough Park site to prepare the area for the main construction phase of the project. The works are being carried out by Story Contracting Ltd and are expected to take around three months to complete.

This phase will include the installation of site security measures and temporary fencing, the creation of a construction compound and laydown area, asbestos removal, utility diversions and disconnections, and the removal of existing infrastructure and equipment.

Once complete, the Cumberland Sports Village will provide a shared stadium for Workington AFC and Workington Town RLFC, creating a modern sporting and community hub for Workington and the wider area.

Leader of Cumberland Council, Cllr Mark Fryer, said:

“It is very encouraging to see the next phase of the Cumberland Sports Village moving forward. The commencement of enabling works is a significant step in preparing the site for the main construction phase.

“The Sports Village represents a major investment in Workington and will deliver modern facilities that support our local clubs, communities and the long-term ambitions for the area.”

A reserved matters planning application has also recently been submitted for the stadium to accommodate up to 5,000 spectators.

The Cumberland Sports Village is supported by the UK Government Town Deal, Cumberland Council, Cumbria Combined Authority and the Football Foundation. The revised scheme will be project managed and delivered by Cumberland Council.
