Cumberland Council is preparing to move into the final phase of the Workington Gateway project, as work continues to deliver major improvements to the town's infrastructure, connectivity and public spaces.
Good progress has been made across the scheme, which forms part of a wider programme of investment to improve road safety, upgrade essential infrastructure and strengthen links to key employment sites and the Port of Workington. While some short-term traffic management and road closures are still required, these essential works will deliver smoother road surfaces, improved road markings and enhanced connectivity across key routes in and around the town.
To enable the next stage of the scheme to be completed safely and efficiently, a series of road closures and traffic management arrangements will be in place during August and September.
The programme has also been coordinated with National Highways who will be delivering works on the A66 Stainburn Road over several weekends outlined below to ensure all improvements are delivered as efficiently as possible.
Workington Gateway project road closures:
A66 Ramsay Brow road closure
- Friday 7 August (7pm) to Monday 10 August (6am)
- Friday 14 August (7pm) to Monday 17 August (6am)
During these closures, the A66 at Ramsay Brow will be closed. Two-way traffic will be maintained on the A596 Washington Street/Bridge Street, with one-way northbound traffic remaining on the A596 Hall Brow to Calva Brow roundabout.
A596 Washington Street resurfacing works (overnight road closures)
- Monday 17 August (7pm) to Friday 21 August (6am)
These road closures are for overnight works between Ramsay Brow and Harrington Road with the A596 reopening each day at 6am.
In addition to the above, it will be necessary to close the Washington St/Jane St junction for two nights (Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 August [to be confirmed]) to enable the traffic signal carriageway loops to be installed. Advance works notice signs will confirm the actual dates.
A596 Hall Park View road closure (Cumbria Police HQ to Calva Brow roundabout)
- Saturday 12 September (6am) to Sunday 13 September (9pm)
This road closure is required to allow resurfacing works and road markings to be completed.
A596 Hall Brow road closure (M&S junction to Cumbria Police HQ)
- Saturday 19 September (6am) to Sunday 20 September (9pm)
This road closure is required to allow resurfacing works and road markings to be completed.
The road closures will provide contractors with the safe working space needed to complete the final phases of the scheme as quickly as possible, helping to minimise longer-term disruption and bringing the Workington Gateway project to completion.
Other planned highway works
Once the Ramsay Brow project is concluded and temporary traffic management has been removed, the council will commence the A66 Active Travel project on Stainburn Road. This project will provide a shared use path linking the town centre to Workington Academy. Delivery of the scheme is planned to begin after the August bank holiday weekend with works on Stainburn Road expected to be complete by Christmas. The associated improvements within Hall Park are planned to be completed in the New Year.
Alongside the Active Travel project, National Highways will be carrying out resurfacing works on A66 Stainburn Road and Stainburn roundabout. The programme will be delivered through a series of weekend road closures throughout August and September and coordinated with the Active Travel project to ensure both schemes can be completed safely and efficiently.

- A66 Ramsay Brow to Park End Road - Friday 11 September (6.30pm) to Monday 14 September (6am)
- A66 Ramsay Brow to Park End Road - Friday 18 September (6.30pm) to Monday 21 September (6am)
- A66 Ramsay Brow to Stainburn Roundabout - Friday 25 September (6.30pm) to Monday 28 September (6am)
No works are intended to take place over the August bank holiday weekend.
Northern Gas Networks works
Residents, businesses and visitors are also being advised of essential gas network improvement works by Northern Gas Networks on Harrington Road from Monday 10 August.
The project will involve replacing ageing metal gas pipes with modern plastic pipework, helping to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply for homes and businesses in the area. Temporary traffic management will be in place while the works are carried out.

Bridge Street footbridge repairs
Following completion of the Hall Park View improvement works, repairs to the Bridge Street footbridge in High Harrington are planned.
The works are expected to take between eight and ten weeks and will be carried out using temporary traffic lights.
Investing in Workington's future
The Workington Gateway project is part of a wider programme of investment in the town. In total, Cumberland Council has secured more than £33 million of Government funding for Workington, including £10 million specifically for the Gateway scheme.
This investment is supporting a range of transformational projects across the town, including the new Innovation Centre, which opened in July 2026, the Digital Accelerator Hub, remediated development sites at the Port of Workington, new cycleways, improvements to Hall Park, and enhancements at Cumberland Sports Village.
