Cumberland Council is delighted to share that major improvements to Workington town centre are nearing completion, marking a significant milestone in the town’s ongoing transformation.
The Workington Town Centre Public Realm and Connectivity Project, delivered by Thomas Armstrong Ltd, is creating a more vibrant, pedestrian-friendly town centre, developing safe, attractive public spaces that will support local businesses, encourage more visitors and attract further private investment.
Works across the town on Murray Road and Central Way are now in their final stages.
Only the final raised crossing and surfacing works remain, due to be completed in early July, alongside a small number of overnight closures.
To support the final stages, a temporary road closure will be in place from the entrance to the multi-story car park Central Way (nights only - from 7pm to 7am) from Monday 6 July to Saturday 11 July, to allow essential carriageway resurfacing works to take place.
Wayfinding improvements are also set to begin shortly, with further information to be shared in due course to help residents and visitors move around the town more easily.
Importantly, all businesses have remained open as usual throughout the construction period, continuing to welcome customers and support the local economy.
This work forms part of a wider programme of investment in Workington, with Cumberland Council securing more than £33 million in government funding. Alongside the Gateway scheme, this investment is supporting a range of transformational projects, including the new Innovation Centre, which opens on Thursday 2 July 2026, the Digital Accelerator Hub, the Port of Workington Logistics and Energy Hub, new cycleways, improvements to Hall Park and Cumberland Sports Village.
Further works are also planned in the coming weeks on Central Way, Workington (under the bridge), where a temporary road closure has been put in place to allow Electricity North West (ENWL) to carry out utility works. These are expected to begin on 29 June 2026 until 5 July. For more information, please visit https://one.network/?tm=GB149515695.
The council would like to thank residents, businesses and visitors for their patience and understanding while these essential improvements have been carried out.
Leader of Cumberland, Cllr Mark Fryer, said:
“This is a hugely important moment for Workington and a clear sign of the investment and ambition we are bringing to the town.
“We have secured over £33 million to transform Workington, and what we are seeing now is history in the making. These improvements are about creating a town centre that is safer, more attractive and better connected, one that will support businesses, bring more people into the town and benefit our communities for years to come.
“We know these works have not always been easy, and we sincerely thank residents, businesses and visitors for bearing with us throughout. Your patience has made it possible to deliver something that will make a real difference to Workington’s future.”
Cumberland Council will continue to keep the community updated as final works are completed and looks forward to seeing the long-term benefits of this investment realised.
