Cumberland Council will begin essential carriageway resurfacing in Workington starting on Monday 1 December 2025.
These works form part of the council’s £33 million central government funding to drive economic development and regeneration in Workington. This investment will deliver improvements to the town centre public realm, strengthen transport links, support growth in manufacturing and clean energy sectors, encourage local business and entrepreneurship, and provide new and improved sports facilities.
The resurfacing will take place at the entrance to Murray Road off Oxford Street and is expected to last four nights, subject to weather and site conditions.
To ensure the safety of both the workforce and the public:
- Works will be carried out under a night-time road closure only
- Working hours: 6.00pm – 6.00am each evening
- During working hours, vehicle access to properties will be available on request by speaking to staff on site (please note delays may occur)
- General parking bays will be suspended during the works.
- A signed diversion route will be in place
- Access to Murray Road will be for deliveries only, by arrangement with staff on site (delays possible)

Cumberland Council thanks residents and road users for their patience and cooperation. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption.
